A Custom Mountain Home Taking Shape in Polk County, North Carolina

There is something special about watching a custom home come together in the mountains, especially when the home has been designed specifically for the people who will live there and the property where it belongs.

Mountain Sky Builders is currently bringing this custom residence to life on White Oak Mountain in Polk County, North Carolina. Surrounded by the natural beauty that makes this part of Western North Carolina such an incredible place to call home, the project reflects much of what we love about building here: a beautiful mountain setting, distinctive architecture, quality materials, and the opportunity to create something truly personal.

The home is currently under construction, with completion anticipated in early 2027. As work progresses, we'll continue documenting the transformation from active construction site to finished mountain home.

Building on White Oak Mountain

White Oak Mountain has a character all its own.

Located above the Columbus and Tryon area, the private mountain community encompasses more than 890 acres along the south face of the Blue Wall Escarpment. More than 400 acres remain green space, complemented by three ponds and miles of private mountain roads.

It's the kind of setting that reminds us why we chose to live, work, and build in Western North Carolina.

Building in the mountains also means respecting the property in front of you. Mountain homes aren't simply suburban floor plans placed at a higher elevation. The terrain, views, access, surrounding landscape, architectural details, and way the owners intend to experience the property all matter.

This White Oak Mountain home is being approached with that same philosophy.

A Highly Personalized Custom Build

This isn't a production home, and it wasn't intended to be.

The White Oak Mountain residence is a large, highly customized home being built around its owners' vision. The project includes specialized spaces such as a dedicated home theater along with custom cabinetry from our sister company, Skytop Custom Cabinets.

From the exterior, the home's personality is already becoming visible.

The design combines substantial stonework across the lower level with textured siding, contrasting trim, dark-framed windows, multiple rooflines, and a covered front entry. Large windows connect the interior with the surrounding mountain environment while helping give the home a strong architectural presence from the exterior.

Even before the house is finished, you can begin to see the balance we're working toward: substantial without feeling imposing, refined without looking out of place, and distinctly at home in the mountains.

Designed Around the Details

One of our favorite things about custom homebuilding is that there isn't a single moment when a house suddenly becomes "custom."

It happens through hundreds of decisions.

It's the placement and proportion of a window. The transition between stone and siding. The way a roofline meets an entry. The cabinetry selected for a particular room. The spaces a family wants because of how they live, not because those spaces happen to appear on a standard floor plan.

The White Oak Mountain project is a great example of that process.

As construction has progressed, the home has moved from framing and sheathing into roofing, windows, stonework, siding, trim, and increasingly detailed exterior finishes. Inside, the same process will continue as the house moves toward its cabinetry, fixtures, finishes, theater, and other personalized elements.

It's a long process, but watching those individual decisions eventually become one cohesive home is exactly why we love what we do.

This project is also an opportunity for two of our local businesses to work together.

Custom cabinetry for the White Oak Mountain residence will be provided by Skytop Cabinets, allowing the cabinetry selections to become part of the broader vision for the home rather than an afterthought at the end of construction.

That coordination is particularly valuable on highly customized projects. Layout, cabinetry, finishes, installation, and the surrounding construction all need to work together.

Mountain Sky Builders has deep roots in this corner of Western North Carolina.

We know these roads. We know these towns. We understand why people fall in love with places like White Oak Mountain, Saluda, Tryon, Columbus, Lake Adger, and the surrounding foothills.

White Oak Mountain itself has been a residential mountain community for decades; its property owners' association dates to 1976. Today, its combination of mountain scenery, substantial green space, ponds, private roads, and proximity to the communities below continues to give it a distinctive sense of place.

For us, building here isn't about imposing a particular "Mountain Sky look" on every property.

It's about understanding what makes the site special, understanding what the homeowner wants from it, and then managing all the moving pieces required to turn that vision into a home.
